Cyprus

A rich tapestry of historical sites, diverse landscapes, and people renowned for their hospitality and warmth.

We visited Cyprus and stayed in Paphos in early 2024. The maximum temperature ranged between 16 to 20 degrees Celsius each day (in the middle of winter), highlighting its desirable climate with over 340 days of sunshine annually.

Cyprus, situated at the crossroads of three continents—Europe, North Africa, and Asia—is the third-largest and third-most populated island in the Mediterranean. It lies east of Greece, north of Egypt, south of Turkey, and west of Lebanon. English is widely spoken by 76% of the population.

Formerly a British colony, Cyprus gained independence in 1960. In 1974, a Greek government-backed attempt to overthrow the elected President of Cyprus led to military intervention by Turkey, which subsequently controlled over a third of the island. This area is recognized only by Turkey. The entire island joined the EU in 2004, though this applies solely to the area under the internationally recognized government—the Republic of Cyprus. Despite ongoing reunification negotiations, a breakthrough remains elusive.

Nicosia, the capital city, enchants visitors with its blend of ancient history and modern vibrancy. The city's walled old town, with its narrow streets and charming architecture, offers a glimpse into its rich past. Nicosia's vibrant cafe culture, bustling markets, and lively nightlife create a dynamic atmosphere. Its strategic location in the heart of the Mediterranean makes it a convenient base for exploring the rest of the island's natural and cultural treasures. It is the world's last divided capital, with a UN-patrolled buffer zone running east to west across the city.

Paphos, a tourist gem, boasts an international airport 20 kilometres from the city and a population of 36,000. It offers numerous safe, sandy beaches, a picturesque harbour, and several first-class golf courses within a 20-minute drive.

The city also provides excellent medical facilities and a secure living environment. Entertainment options abound, including traditional restaurants and tavernas alongside cafes, bars, and nightclubs.

Paphos has a large expatriate community, primarily British. The supermarkets there were the most impressive we encountered during our six-month, 14-country European tour, offering a wide selection at reasonable prices.

As a former British colony, all legal documentation in Cyprus is in English, eliminating the need for translations in property or other matters—a significant advantage for property buyers.

We've partnered with a prominent real estate agency with offices in Paphos and the upscale Coral Bay. In addition to property purchases, they assist with residency applications, bank account openings, property maintenance, and accountant recommendations for tax file numbers and returns.

We were impressed by their industry standing, experience, and professionalism during our meeting with the principal and staff. They have a proven track record serving overseas property investors from across Europe.
